My Poolside Essentials & Summer Reading List

August 10, 2020

During this summer of quarantine, I’ve been spending a lot of time at the pool in my apartment building. This is the first summer I’ve spent entirely in Michigan and also the first summer I haven’t seen my friends & family. It’s been such an adjustment trying to fill all of alone time, so I’ve read quite a few bit over the 3 weeks I had off.

Here are the books I’ve read so far this summer with a quick review of some!

My Summer Reading List

Books I liked

  • A non teaching book I loved: The Vanishing Half which follows the lives of one white twin and one Black twin through adulthood
  • Most of these books were re-reads for me, but Black School, White School was a new one for me this summer. Lisa Delpit wrote the foreward which is how I heard about the book. Honestly, this book sustained my attention for longer than I expected (Delpit’s books are really research dense and I need frequent breaks usually to process) and was a much more accessible read for me.
  • Supermarket is another non-teaching book and is so, so good if you like thrillers. I’m a huge Stephen King fan so if you like him, you’ll love this book.

Books I didn't like

  • I was really disappointed to see that Hacking School Discipline had literally zero references in the back of the book, so it’s not research based. Only pitfall of ordering on Amazon.
  • I re-read Whole Brain Teaching because I really want to approach it through a more critical lens now that I understand how authoritative it is, and yeah it basically focuses on controlling children and their bodies so that’s that

My Poolside Essentials

I’ve also had to really adjust to extended time in the sun & chlorine/salt in the pool that isn’t the best for my hair and skin. I’ve stocked up on quite a few beauty essentials that have been game changers after a lot of trial and error! I also have a few things that I take down to the pool so I’m not constantly running up to my apartment. Here’s a list of what’s in my pool bag!

Earbuds

I picked up these wireless earbuds so I wouldn’t have to worry about my Airpod Pros at the gym or pool. I was SO impressed at how amazing these are! Bluetooth enabling is tricky the first time so just hit the factory reset button in the manual and then it’ll work. Here are some of the features that make them super similar to the airpods:

  • 3 different ear tip sizes (my ears are super small)
  • 6 hours of battery life. I picked up some $10 wireless earbuds at first for the pool and they were too big/ lasted for like an hour and a half max.
  • Wireless charging case- super necessary at the pool!

This UV protectant spray is way better than even the $40 products I’ve tried. It protects your hair from getting dried out and damaged and prevents your scalp from burning! This brand also makes an SPF scalp spray but I think it’s super heavy and greasy. This one is really lightweight and doesn’t leave any residue! It can also be used for blowouts and straightening your hair but I just keep this in my pool bag.

SPF

Ok so STORYTIME. We all used Fletcher (@thirdgradeswag_)’s spray sunscreen within the first 5 min of stepping foot in the Bahamas. All the overpriced gift shop had was this sunscreen. It’s a tinted, non-greasy mineral SPF 50 lotion and makes me look like a bronzed goddess. I use it on my face and chest when in the sun! I’ve restocked MANY times since our trip last summer, this was the best accidental purchase I’ve ever made!

Back-to-School Distance Learning Prep

August 3, 2020

This back to school season is definitely the first of its kind. We already started back this week and have about a month left until the first day of school for students. We have no idea whether we’ll be virtual year round, but we will be using a virtual model for our first week with students.

At the end of the last school year, I didn’t have much of a dedicated space for virtual teaching and learning. I moved a week before the pandemic and didn’t have any furniture or materials besides my laptop in my new home office! Once I started delivering virtual professional development this summer, I started to settle into a dedicated space, but there was a lot of trial and error when it came to adjusting to this new virtual world.

I partnered with Walmart to set up a distance learning space at home and I love it so far! I had a very limited budget and was able to find everything in this post from their back-to-school teacher shop at an affordable price point. My goal was to set up a space that was functional based on my experiences this summer with virtual PD, but also to have materials that I could easily pack up and bring to school if we were to return in person again.

This is what the space looks like so far! This desk is only $59, but it’s a great size and has a spacious drawer as well. I’ll get into tech setup a little later in the post, but first I wanted to share some of my favorite finds!

BIRU-WP-20200803T083350GMT-0400.jpg

Here’s what the inside of the drawer looks like right now! I’m obsessed with these retractable highlighters– no more losing the cap! The felt pens are super affordable and I love using them under the document camera. The tip is fine enough where others can see precisely across the screen, which is something I definitely had to get used to compared to writing big anchor charts during the school year!  The colors don’t bleed through but are still dark enough to be seen clearly.

BIRU-WP-20200806T183555GMT-0400.jpg

This planner is my new favorite! Although it’s a student planner, it has a section for every subject and is super lightweight for only $8. It’s perfect for teachers who love the structure of a teacher planner but don’t like the bulk that comes along with it!

BIRU-WP-20200806T184456GMT-0400.jpg

I mentioned the retractable highlighters earlier, but Pen + Gear also makes retractable dry erase markers! With such light colored carpets, I can’t risk losing the cap and accidentally dropping one. I think they’re such a great idea!

Last but not least, here is what my tech setup looks like for digital learning! All items are linked below the image.

Teacher Organization Tips for Back to School

August 31, 2019

It’s almost the start of a new school year and I’m currently in the process of moving to a new school! This is my seventh move since the start of teaching, whether it’s classrooms, grade levels, or schools, so I’ve learned the importance of staying organized from Day 1.

This year, I’ve partnered with Walmart to bring you my top 3 tips for staying organized throughout the school year! All of the items in this blog post are super trendy, budget friendly, and practical to help you start your year off organized!

Teacher Organization Tip #1: Store Papers With Pre-Printed Binder Tabs

BIRU-WP-20190831T100256GMT-0400.jpg

It’s easy to have an organized classroom, but nearly impossible to gain control of the pile of paperwork on a teacher’s desk! Field trip forms, running records, student information sheets, testing data… I could go on forever about the amount of papers that come across our desk every day.

I love keeping binders because they allow papers to be found quickly if they’re organized. However, I’ve been totally guilty of throwing random piles of papers in binders and then shuffling when I need something. My second year of teaching, our school’s Reading Recovery teacher showed me her secret to keeping an organized binder and it has been a GAMECHANGER: pre-printed binder tabs! I know binder tabs seem like common sense, but the ones often found in school supply aisles only have 3-5 tabs. Typically, you’ll need moe than that and the smaller they are, the harder they are to write on. Here are the types I use during the school year:

  • A-Z Binder Tabs: I use these to store copies of running records & for student contact information and testing data.
  • 1-10 Tabs: Can be used to organize curriculum documents by unit.
  • Jan-Dec Tabs: Use for seasonal/holiday documents or meeting notes for your teaching portfolio.

Teacher Organization Tip #2: Keep important papers and writing materials in one place

BIRU-WP-20190831T101104GMT-0400.jpg

Nothing is worse than getting to a staff meeting and having to try to find a pen! I like to use different colored ink for grading, etc. so I love how this Yoobi pencil case holds all of my pens and markers in one spot. Right now I have Ink Joy pens for note taking, Flair pens for grading, and Mr. Sketch markers for anchor charts inside of it. I also love how the zipped document holder also holds everything in one spot! This year I plan to keep loose note paper, peer observation documents, and Post-It Notes inside when I visit other teachers’ classrooms.

Teacher Organization Tip #3: Have a filing system for copies

BIRU-WP-20190831T102422GMT-0400.jpg

I’ve been using this system with 3-compartment Sterilite bins for the past 5 years and it really works for me. The bins are super durable and hold a lot of papers! I use Astrobrights “bright” cardstock to label each compartment and cover the papers/folders that are inside. It’s a really helpful system to have when a substitute is in your room, too! I use colored folders to take the master copies down to the teachers’ lounge on Fridays so I know which copies to make for each day the following week. It’s a simple yet effective system so there aren’t piles of paper on my desk or missed copies throughout the week.

What supplies do you use to stay organized throughout the year? Let me know with a comment- I’m always looking for new ideas!

Lunchbox Snacks for Busy Teachers

August 31, 2019

The hardest transition for me this upcoming school year will definitely be going from a school with an hour lunch to one with a 25-minute lunch! Because I’ll likely be more hungry throughout the day, I’ve stocked up on my favorite lunchbox snacks to keep by my desk. If you have limited refrigeration and time, here’s a list of my favorite snacks to enjoy at work!

Back-To-School Savings at Walmart

July 31, 2019

BIRU-WP-20191226T161245GMT-0500.jpg

It’s back to school season almost everywhere, which means this week is full of the best deals! We still have a month left of summer here in Michigan, but this week the school supply displays went up at my local Walmart. There were so many great deals that items were already selling out! I love to plan ahead (and avoid crowds), so I’m bringing you the best school supply deals that you can shop right from home. This will be my sixth year teaching and this list is full of items I can’t live without- whether you’re a teacher or parent, this list will have you ready for the first day of school!

Pencils & Pens

Dixon Ticonderoga Presharpened 30 ct.– Ask any teacher, these are HANDS DOWN the best pencils. They write smoothly and erase well. Even students get frustrated when they erasing with other pencils. They also sharpen really easily and last a long time, but the timesaver here is getting them PRE-SHARPENED right in the box! It saves so much time and is so much less distracting for teachers to be able to just get a pencil out of the box and hand it to a student without having to sharpen it.

PaperMate Flair Pens (12 Pack)-  A lot of teachers LOVE these for grading and planning. They write like markers but don’t leak through the page. They’re currently on sale for under $10!

PaperMate Ink Joy Pens (10 Pack)– These are my personal favorite! They’re gel pens that glide really smoothly but don’t leak. I love using them in my planner and on my calendar, and they’re great for teaching students to organize a schedule as well. Plus, the colors are the best and really show up bright on paper!

My First Ticonderoga (12 pack)– I loved these when I taught K-1! They’re the best for supporting the developmental needs of children learning to write. Plus, they break a lot less easily due to the thick barrel!

Art Supplies

I always make a point to leave these three items off student school supply lists and just provide them for the entire class. The quality is truly the best- other crayons break easily and other gluesticks/markers dry out quickly. This time of year, I get them in bulk so I don’t have to worry about replacing them when the price goes up! It actually saves me a lot of time and money in the long run.

These were also the items that were almost sold out in my local store! I shared a picture below- the display was up for no longer than 3 days before everything was gone! The Rollback is THAT good.

Crayola crayons (24 ct). – 0.50/box

Crayola markers (10 ct)– 0.97/ box

Elmer’s glue sticks (60 ct)– This box will last the ENTIRE school year and even carry over into the next!

 Dry Erase Essentials

Whiteboards are essential for any K-5 classroom and can add up quickly throughout the year- they hardly ever go on sale, so now’s the time!

Expo Chisel Tip Vibrant Colors (8 pk).– These are on sale and the color selection is full of teacher favorites (goodbye, brown!)

Expo 36 ct Fine Tip Markers– 36 markers for around $20 is a STEAL. This is enough for a class set and will last you all year.

24 pack of Whiteboard Erasers– I got this classroom set 3 years ago and haven’t looked back!

 Teacher Favorites

These didn’t really have a category but they’re truly items I can’t live without during the school year! This is always the most affordable time of year to stock up.

Post- It Self Stick Tabletop Easel Pad– I love this easel pad for small group instruction! Markers don’t leak through the thick pages.

Clorox Wipes (4 ct).- BUY 3, GET 1 FREE. That is all.

Scotch Thermal Laminating Pouches (100 ct)– If you have a personal laminator, these are the BEST. 100 for $10 is a steal.

BIRU-WP-20191226T163306GMT-0500.jpg

PS- how amazing is this pencil organizer?! It holds all my teaching essentials!

BIRU-WP-20190731T154534GMT-0400.jpg

See what I mean?! The in-store displays were almost all sold out of the best deals!
